Yes, you can polish concrete without a densifier—but you probably should not on new, porous, or low-grade slabs. A densifier chemically reacts with free lime in cured concrete to harden the surface and lock in the polish. On dense, well-cured old concrete (5+ years, 4000+ psi) you can often skip it and still get a workable sheen. On fresh pours, soft mixes, or warehouse slabs that need dust-proofing, skipping the densifier is the most common reason a polished floor hazes over within a year.
Once you do densify, the resin step needs clean, open-face pads that do not over-cut: the 8 Triangles Diamond Resin Floor Polishing Pads (JOY-RFP-03) and the Copper Bond Diamond Transitional Polishing Pads (JOY-RFP-C2) are the right progression; finish with the Diamond Resin Polishing Pads for Concrete Terrazzo Floor (JOY-RFP-01) series for final clarity.
A concrete densifier (lithium, sodium, potassium silicate, or colloidal silica) is a low-viscosity liquid that sinks into the pores of hardened concrete and reacts with calcium hydroxide (free lime) to form calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) gel. This:
| Situation | Skip the densifier? |
|---|---|
| Old slab (5+ years), 4000+ psi, already hard | Yes, acceptable |
| Interior basement, low traffic | Yes, with a sealer |
| Temporary or show-floor install | Yes |
| New pour (< 28 days) | No—you must wait and densify |
| Warehouse, retail, garage, dust-proofing required | No—mandatory |
| Soft / porous / low-PSI mix | No—mandatory |
On the wrong slab, skipping the densifier shows up within weeks:
Do not apply densifier to a hot, sunny slab—it will dry before it reacts.
A: You can, but it will not penetrate well through the closed surface and the result will be uneven. Densify between 200 and 400 grit.
Standard recommendation is 7–28 days, depending on the densifier. Lithium products often allow 3–7 days; sodium/potassium silicates prefer 14+ days.
A: No. A densifier hardens and dust-proofs from inside; a sealer sits on the surface and blocks liquids. Most polished floors use both.
A: About 0.5–1.5 USD per m² on material. Re-doing a failed polish costs 10–20× that. The densifier is almost always the cheapest insurance on a commercial slab.
The densifier is not a marketing upsell—on most commercial slabs it is the difference between a floor that looks great for 10 years and one that hazes after one winter. Skip it only on dense, old, low-traffic slabs. When in doubt, densify.
