A typical walk-behind concrete grinder with coarse metal-bond segments removes about 1 to 3mm per pass on normal concrete, and up to 5mm per pass with heavy pressure and aggressive tooling on soft concrete. Hand grinders remove about 0.5 to 1mm per pass. A scarifier or planer removes far more, 3 to 10mm per pass, because it uses cutting tools instead of diamonds. For leveling jobs, grind in multiple light passes rather than forcing deep cuts, which keeps the floor flat and the tooling cool. For the right tooling on this job, see metal-bond trapezoid grinding discs, double S segment discs.
Removal depth depends on the machine weight, the tooling bond and grit, the concrete hardness and the feed speed. Heavy ride-on machines push diamonds deeper and remove more per pass than light walk-behinds. Coarse metal-bond segments with large diamonds remove the most; resin bond and fine grit remove little and are for smoothing. Hard, aggregate-heavy concrete resists deep grinding, so expect smaller depths per pass. Feed speed matters too: slow passes remove more, fast passes skim the surface. Related tooling is available in our single rhombus segment discs range.
Grinding deep in one pass overloads the tooling, glazes the segments and can grind a dip into the floor where the machine hesitated. Multiple light passes keep the floor flat, keep the diamonds sharp and let you check the level as you go. Use a long straightedge or laser level between passes, and stop when the surface is within tolerance. It is faster overall to grind 5 light passes than to burn one deep pass and fix the low spots.
If a floor is out of level by more than about 6 to 10mm, grinding it flat is a slow, expensive job. Options: use a scarifier for the bulk removal, grind the high spots selectively, or pour self-leveling compound to fill low areas. Grinding a whole floor down 10mm with a walk-behind can take many passes and wears tooling fast. Measure the total high spot first, then choose the fastest tool for the removal depth you actually need.
A: You can grind off several millimeters safely if the slab has enough cover over the rebar. Check the slab thickness and rebar cover first; grinding a slab too thin compromises its strength.
A: On soft concrete with a heavy machine and aggressive tooling, yes. On standard walk-behind machines, plan on 1 to 3mm per pass and multiple passes.
A: Scarifying. A scarifier with tungsten cutters removes 3 to 10mm per pass, much faster than diamond grinding, but it leaves a rough surface that needs grinding to finish.
Most grinders remove 1 to 3mm per pass, with heavier machines and aggressive tooling pushing toward 5mm. Work in multiple light passes, check the level with a straightedge, and bring in a scarifier when you need to remove more than a few millimeters. Match the tool to the removal depth and the floor comes out flat without burning tooling.
