Grind around floor drains with a hand-held grinder and a narrow cup wheel, working from the drain edge outward in short arcs. Remove the drain cover or tape over the grate, keep the wheel at least 10 mm from the metal rim, and finish the last 20 mm with a small angle grinder. Never let a floor machine run over a drain; it chips the cast iron ring and kicks back, which is both a repair bill and a safety incident.
Floor drains and pipe penetrations break the slab surface and interrupt the scratch pattern. Floor grinders cannot reach within 150 mm of a drain without hitting the metal ring, so hand work fills the gap. Done wrong, you chip the drain ring, gouge the concrete shoulder, or leave a visible dip that catches water after coating. On a polished floor, the drain is also the focal point under light, so uneven grinding shows there first.
Remove the grate and set it aside, or tape a steel plate over the opening. Grind dust falling into a drain is a cleanup nightmare and can clog the line weeks later. Cap pipe penetrations with a plastic bag taped over the flange so concrete dust does not fall inside the pipe. A roll of duct tape on the tool belt saves hours of plumbing cleanup. If the drain is old cast iron, tape the rim edge too, because fresh grinding can chip a corner and leave a sharp burr that cuts shoes.
Mark a 20 mm circle around the drain edge with a pencil. This is the no-grind zone where you work by hand. Anything beyond that circle the floor machine can reach, but stay two drum widths away until you know the ring height. If the drain sits proud of the slab, flag it early so the machine operator does not chew into it.
Use a 115 mm or 125 mm diamond cup wheel with narrow segments so the rim tracks tight against the drain ring without wandering. A JOY-CW-R6 6-round cup wheel gives a clean arc because the small segments follow curves better than wide rows, and the round profile does not catch on the drain rim. Keep the grinder at 15 degrees max near the metal, because a tilted cup digs into the shoulder and leaves a dip that coating cannot hide.
For really tight spots around 50 mm pipe penetrations, switch to a single-row cup wheel like JOY-CW-SR, whose narrow face reaches into corners double-row wheels cannot. Finish with a finer grit cup so the edge around the pipe matches the floor scratch.
Letting the floor machine drop over the drain lip chips the cast iron ring. Taping only the grate while leaving the pipe open dumps dust into plumbing. Grinding parallel to the drain instead of radial leaves swirl marks that show under coating. Keep the shroud connected even on hand work, because the fine dust around drains is exactly the silica that respirators exist for. When in doubt, slow down; drain repair is far more expensive than an extra five minutes of grinding. If a job has more than three drains, budget an extra hour per drain for hand work, because rushing the ring is where most callbacks happen.
Run a straightedge across the drain edge. The concrete shoulder should sit level within 1 mm of the drain rim; a dip catches water, a high spot kicks shoes. Shine a flashlight at grazing angle to see swirl marks that a ceiling light hides. Touch the ring with a gloved hand; rough spots mean the cup wheel caught metal.
Vacuum the drain opening, remove the tape, and wipe the ring with a damp rag. Any concrete dust left inside the drain dries into a crust that clogs piping weeks later. Keep a shop vacuum handy, and never blow dust into the drain with compressed air; it settles in the trap.
Drains and penetrations reward slow hand work. Protect the opening, mark the no-grind zone, narrow the cup wheel, and blend outward. Browse edge tooling at the JOY-TP-R3 trapezoid page or the grinding catalog to keep detail work fast and clean.
