Grind concrete around pipes, vents, and columns with a handheld angle grinder fitted with a smaller diamond cup or trapezoid disc, working in short passes and feathering the edge into the main floor. Use the smallest disc that reaches the obstacle, grind at the same grit sequence as the main floor, and blend with a final pass so the finish matches. Protect pipes and vents with tape or covers before grinding so debris and dust do not damage them.
Cover pipes, conduit, and vents with tape or temporary caps so grinding debris, dust, and slurry do not get inside. Mark a clean boundary around the obstacle, and if the floor machine cannot reach it, mark the hand-grind area so you know where to blend. Clear the area of loose items and check the floor for fixtures that stick up; grinding over a protruding bolt or coupling will shred the disc. For recessed vents, decide whether to grind level with the floor or leave a small clearance so the vent can be removed for cleaning.
Use a 100-125 mm angle grinder for most obstacle work; it reaches around pipes and into corners that a floor machine cannot. A 100 mm cup wheel is ideal for tight spots, while a 125 mm trapezoid disc covers more area for blending. Match the grit to the main floor's current stage so the finish blends: if the floor is at 80 grit, do the obstacle work at 80 grit, then blend. For metal pipes that sit proud, grind the concrete around them rather than the pipe, and use a protective sleeve if contact is unavoidable.
For a pipe penetrating the floor, grind a ring around it in short overlapping passes, keeping the disc flat and the grinder moving. Work from the pipe outward, feathering the edge into the main floor. Around columns, grind each face square first, then blend the corners with a smaller disc, working in two directions so the corner finish matches. Do not dig a groove next to the obstacle; keep the disc flat and use light passes so the transition is smooth. Check with a straightedge held across the obstacle to confirm level.
| Obstacle | Disc | Technique |
|---|---|---|
| Pipes | 100 mm cup wheel | Ring passes, feather outward |
| Vents / grilles | 100-125 mm disc | Grind level, small clearance |
| Columns | 125 mm trapezoid | Faces square, corners blended |
| Edges / walls | 100 mm cup wheel | Short passes, light pressure |
Edges along walls and door frames are ground with the angle grinder, holding it so the disc runs parallel to the wall. Keep the grinder flat and move along the edge in short passes, overlapping into the main floor by 100-150 mm so the edge blends. Do not tilt the grinder to cut a chamfer unless the design calls for it; a tilted disc leaves a groove. For doorways, grind across the threshold in one direction and feather both sides so there is no lip. Vacuum as you go so you can see the transition.
After the obstacle areas are ground, run a full pass over the whole floor with the current grit so the hand-ground zones and machine-ground zones match. Check for visible rings or edges with a straightedge and by running your hand across the surface; any step needs another pass. Change to the next finer grit and repeat, blending each stage. Finish with the same sealer or densifier as the main floor. The goal is that the obstacle work is invisible in the final finish, which comes from matching grit, direction, and pressure across the whole floor.
For dependable concrete grinding, equip your machine with a diamond trapezoid grinding disc matched to the concrete hardness.

Where the job continues to a polished finish, the same diamond resin polishing pads used on the main floor keep the transition invisible.
