Average response time: under 24 hours

For small concrete areas under 10 m², use a 125 or 180 mm angle grinder with a diamond cup wheel rated for 8,500 to 11,000 RPM. Run 30/40 grit for leveling and coating removal, then 60 grit to smooth. Keep light pressure, move in overlapping arcs, and never hold the wheel still on the floor. Fit a dust shroud with a HEPA extractor, wear a face shield, and feather the edges so the patch blends with the surrounding slab. A hand grinder is not a mini floor grinder: it removes material slowly and needs frequent inspection.
Hand-held grinders are the right tool for edge work, patch repairs, doorway thresholds, bathroom slabs, removing paint spots, and cleaning up after a floor machine. They are wrong for large open floors, where a planetary machine is faster and flatter. The mistake crews make is using a hand grinder for too large an area, which takes hours and leaves a wavy surface. Match the tool to the area: hand grinder up to 10 m², small walk-behind machine from 10 to 50 m², planetary machine above that. A good rule is if you would need to refill the grinder disk twice by hand, the area is too big for hand work.
A 125 mm wheel runs at 10,000 RPM and fits tight edges; a 180 mm wheel removes faster at 8,500 RPM. Match the wheel RPM rating to your grinder: never use a wheel rated below your tool speed. For general concrete patching, a double-row cup wheel like the JOY-CW-DR double-row cup wheel is the standard; for finishing and edge blending, a single-row wheel leaves a smoother scratch pattern. Check the wheel guard rating too; guards are matched to wheel diameter and using an oversized wheel on a small guard is a safety risk.
Start with 30/40 grit metal bond for leveling, paint and thin-set removal. Move to 60 grit for smoothing before sealer or coating. Do not jump to 120 grit by hand: it glazes quickly on small machines because contact pressure is low. If the patch needs polishing later, finish by hand at 60 grit and let the resin pads do the rest when you bring in the floor machine.
Follow these steps on every patch:
For tight corners and edges, a smaller wheel like the JOY-CW-SR single-row cup wheel fits closer to walls and door frames than a large double-row wheel, which reduces hand trimming later. The single-row design also runs cooler, which helps when the grinder is held close to trim and baseboard.
Hand grinding without a shroud blows silica dust everywhere. Fit a vacuum shroud rated for your wheel size and connect a HEPA extractor. If the area is inside an occupied room, tape plastic sheeting around the patch and run a fan blowing outward. Wet cutting is possible indoors but slurry cleanup is messy; for small patches, dry with extraction is faster and cleaner. Keep the window open or the door cracked for cross-ventilation, even with extraction running.
Wear a face shield, hearing protection, knee pads and P100 respirator. Hold the grinder with both hands and keep the wheel guard in place. Never grind above chest height; if you need to reach a wall top, use a extension handle rather than lifting the grinder. Unplug the tool when changing wheels, and check the wheel for cracks before every shift.
These small errors create hours of rework:
A hand-ground patch should feel flat to the palm, blend softly at the edges, and show uniform scratches under side light. Vacuum, inspect, and if it passes, proceed with sealer or coating. For small interior jobs, arrow-segment wheels like the JOY-CW-A12 cup wheel cut fast with less dust and leave a clean surface. Hand grinding is a craft: light pressure, steady motion, frequent checks, and patience beat forcing the wheel. Take breaks every 20 minutes to rest the wrist and shoulder, because hand grinders deliver high vibration that accumulates fast on small jobs.
