Average response time: under 24 hours

Urine stains and odor on concrete come from salts and urea crystallized in the pores — surface cleaning cannot reach them. Grinding removes 0.5-1 mm of contaminated paste with a 30/40 metal-bond disc on a walk-behind grinder, cutting off the odor source in one pass. After grinding, rinse with a mild acid (vinegar or 5% phosphoric) to neutralize salts, let the slab dry 48 hours, then seal with epoxy or polyaspartate to block future wicking. PCD is overkill — standard metal-bond diamond does the job on kennel, basement and laundry floors.
Urine wicks 5-20 mm into porous concrete. Detergents and enzyme cleaners reach 1-2 mm max; the deep crystals stay and slowly release odor, especially when humidity rises. Grinding removes the contaminated surface layer mechanically:
Do not use PCD — it would strip too aggressively and gouge the slab for a problem that is only 1 mm deep.
Use a 250-500 mm walk-behind grinder with a 3-head trapezoid holder or single-disc plate:
On a planetary head, run three Diamond Trapezoid Grinding Disc (JOY-TP-R3) trapezoid discs so wear stays even across the plate.
| Step | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Acid rinse | 5% phosphoric or white vinegar, scrub, rinse clean | Neutralizes urine salts left in pores |
| 2. Dry 48 h | Air movement + dehumidifier | Salts wick back if sealed wet |
| 3. Seal | Epoxy or polyaspartate, 2 coats | Blocks future liquid penetration |
Skipping the acid rinse is the most common mistake: grinding exposes fresh pores, but the salt crystals are still there and odor returns in weeks.
A: If you remove the contaminated layer (0.5-1 mm), neutralize salts, and seal, yes. If urine has wicked deeper than 10 mm — rare but possible in old basements — you may need a second grind pass or a penetrating odor encapsulant.
A: PCD is designed for coatings, not stains. It would remove 2-3 mm of concrete unnecessarily. Standard 30/40 metal-bond diamond is correct.
A: 100% solids epoxy or polyaspartate — impermeable and chemical-resistant. Acrylic sealers are porous and will let urine wick through over time.
A: After the acid rinse, full dry time (48 h), and two coats of sealant cured per the manufacturer. Plan 5-7 days total before pets return.
Urine-stained concrete is a repeat restoration job for kennels, vet clinics, basements and laundry rooms. Grind 0.5-1 mm with 30/40 metal-bond, neutralize with mild acid, dry fully, then seal with epoxy. Skip PCD — standard trapezoid discs and edge cup wheels do the job cleanly. JOY TECH supplies metal-bond trapezoid discs and zigzag cup wheels for every common grinder, so your restoration crew can price odor jobs with predictable consumable cost.
