Vertical concrete walls, tilt-up panels and columns are ground with a 100-125 mm diamond cup wheel on a 1000-1500 W angle grinder — never with a walk-behind floor machine. The job is light stock removal: feathering trowel marks, blending patch edges, smoothing form-tie holes, and stripping laitance or old sealer before coating. Keep pressure light, let the wheel spin at full RPM, and move horizontally in overlapping 100 mm passes. A soft-bond 30/40 cup wheel runs cooler on vertical work and resists loading.
Unlike floor grinding, vertical work rarely removes more than 0.5-1 mm. Buyers asking about it are usually prepping walls for epoxy coating, exposing decorative wall aggregate, or repairing spalled columns. Heavy stock removal on a vertical wall is impractical: gravity works against you, dust falls into your face, and the grinder's weight is your only pressure.
Use the smallest practical grinder. A 125 mm (5 in) tool balances reach and control; a 180 mm wheel is too heavy above shoulder height. 5 inch 125 mm L Segment Diamond Grinding Cup Wheels (JOY-CW-L) L-segment cup wheels are a common choice because the open segment pattern clears slurry and dust away from the wall.
| Tool | Best for | Cautions |
|---|---|---|
| 100 mm grinder + cup wheel | High walls, columns, tight corners | Lower removal rate |
| 125 mm grinder + Diamond Double Row Cup Wheels (JOY-CW-DR) | Wall coating prep, general blending | Use paddle-switch grinder |
| 125 mm 5 inch 125 mm Spiral Cup Wheels (JOY-CW-S1) | Fine finish passes, sealer prep | Not for heavy stock removal |
| PCD cup wheel | Epoxy / coating on walls | Aggressive — practice on scrap first |
A paddle-switch (not trigger) grinder is a safety must: if the tool kicks back and slips, the switch releases when your hand opens.
Vertical dry grinding sends silica dust straight into the breathing zone — this is the worst possible configuration for dust exposure. Two acceptable options:
A: No. Walk-behind and planetary grinders are designed for downward force and cannot be lifted. Edge grinders (9 inch) on long handles are made for wall faces but need a straight arm and are slow.
A: Standard diamond wheels glaze instantly on paint and epoxy. Strip the coating first with a PCD cup wheel, then follow with a normal 30/40 diamond cup wheel for profile.
A: Soft bond, always. Vertical work runs cooler than floor grinding, and a soft bond keeps fresh diamonds exposed on the lighter pressure. Medium-hard bonds glaze in minutes on walls.
A: Manage slurry with a 150 mm squeegee and a bucket. Plan for 2-3 liters of water per m²; let the wall dry 24 h before coating.
Vertical grinding is a specialty trade that earns premium day rates, but it punishes the wrong tooling. Pick a soft-bond 125 mm cup wheel, keep pressure light, respect dust rules, and switch to PCD only when coating is present. JOY TECH supplies L-segment, double-row and spiral cup wheels in 100-125 mm with M14 and 5/8-11 threads so your wall-prep crews always have the right disc on the truck.
