Average response time: under 24 hours

A set of coarse metal bond diamond segments typically grinds 500-800 m² on medium concrete, while finer grits and softer bonds wear faster, often 300-500 m². The real answer depends on concrete hardness, bond match, and technique. Track square meters per set and measure segment height; replacement is due at about half original height.
Segment wear is a balance between the diamond grit and the metal bond. Hard concrete wears the bond fast; soft concrete glazes it. A correctly matched bond self-sharpens and cuts fast, using diamonds evenly. Mismatched bonds either wear segments away in hours or glaze them into a smooth surface that cuts nothing. Technique matters too: forcing the machine, running too fast, and grinding dirty floors all shorten segment life.
Coarse metal bond (16-25 grit) does the heavy stock removal and typically lasts 500-800 m² per set on medium concrete. Medium grits (40-80) last similar or slightly less per set because they are used over more passes. Resin bond pads last 300-800 m² depending on grit. On aggressive jobs like coating removal with PCD or heavy profiling, life drops noticeably because the tool works harder.
Use a segment height gauge or a simple ruler: measure from the plate base to the top of the segments when new and record it. Check every day or every 200 m². When segments reach half their original height, plan a replacement; below that, cutting slows and the plate risks scoring. Replace the whole set on a plate at once so the plate runs flat.
Match the bond to the concrete: hard bond for soft concrete, soft bond for hard concrete. Keep the floor clean between grit steps so sand and debris do not act as extra abrasives. Let the machine's weight provide pressure instead of leaning on it, keep water flowing on wet jobs, and check tooling for glaze before it stops cutting. A dressed tool cuts faster and wears more evenly.
A> The bond is too soft for the concrete or the floor is heavily contaminated. Switch to a harder bond and clean the floor before grinding.
A> Only plates designed for welding, and only if the plate body is sound. Most trapezoid tooling uses replaceable segments, not welding.
A> Wet grinding cools the bond and usually extends life, provided the water keeps the surface clean. Dry grinding runs hotter and wears faster on hard concrete.
Segment life is a function of bond match, concrete condition, and technique, not a fixed number. Measure height, track square meters, and keep the bond matched to the floor, and your diamond grinding tooling will deliver its full working life.
