To grind a basement slab for a clean workshop floor, first run a moisture test - basements hold 4-8% moisture and must be dried or coated with a vapor-compatible system. Then grind the slab with a 30/40 metal-bond trapezoid disc such as the triple-round-segment grinding disc, followed by a 60/80 pass, using a HEPA dust collector. Stop at CSP 2-3. Do not polish - a lightly profiled, sealed workshop floor handles oil spills, rolling tools and forklift traffic better than a glossy surface that hides wet spots.
Basement slabs are wettest on the underside. Grinding opens pores and pulls moisture to the surface. If you skip this check, you will grind, seal, and watch the coating bubble up in spring.
| Test | Pass threshold | What to do if fail |
|---|---|---|
| Plastic sheet (16 h) | No condensation under sheet | Run dehumidifier 1-2 weeks |
| Calcium chloride (MVER) | < 3 lb/1000 sqft/24h | Use vapor barrier epoxy |
| In-situ RH probe | < 75% RH | Do not coat; install vapor barrier |
Most basement doors are 800-900 mm wide and ceilings are 2.2-2.4 m. A 600 mm ride-on machine will not fit. Plan for a 300-480 mm walk-behind unit or a 270 mm single-disc machine.
Tooling on a 480 mm planetary machine uses three trapezoid discs; on a 270 mm single disc it uses one round plate. Match the bond to the concrete - soft bond for hard basement concrete, hard bond for pour with crushed limestone aggregate.
Workshop floors take oil, heavy tools and occasional tire marks. You want a flat, even, slightly textured surface - not a mirror.
For edges, a hurricane cup wheel on a 125 mm angle grinder profiles right up to the wall and around the sump pump lid.
A basement slab poured in the 1980s is rarely flat to millimetre tolerance. Run a 2 m straight edge. Variation under 5 mm is fine for a workshop. If variation is 10-20 mm, grinding will not fix it - you need a self-leveling overlay after grinding. Do not try to grind down high spots by 10 mm; you will expose aggregate and wear through a set of discs in 30 sqm.
No. A polished basement floor shows every oil drip and wet spot. A lightly ground, sealed matte finish is safer and easier to maintain.
With a 480 mm machine and two grits, plan one full day: 4 h grinding, 1 h edges, 2 h cleanup and vacuum.
Yes, but dust will circulate. Seal off the basement stairwell with plastic and run the duct out a window. Keep temperature above 10 C for the sealer cure.
If RH is above 75%, yes. Use an epoxy moisture-tolerant system, not a penetrating acrylic. Test first.
A basement workshop floor starts with moisture, not tooling. Dry the slab, profile it with 30/40 then 60/80 metal-bond discs, seal it, and you have a flat, easy-to-clean surface that handles real work. JOY TECH supplies trapezoid discs and cup wheels sized for the small walk-behind machines that actually fit through a basement door.
