Rubber gym flooring — rolled EPDM/Nitrile sheets, interlocking rubber tiles and PVC gym flooring — bonds to concrete with pressure-sensitive adhesive or full-spread mastic. The slab must be ground to a CSP 2 profile (100-300 micron), flat within 3 mm over 2 m, and tested below 75% relative humidity before adhesive goes down. A 30/40 metal-bond trapezoid disc on a 250-500 mm walk-behind grinder opens the surface in one pass; do not polish. Moisture testing is non-negotiable because rubber traps vapor against the slab.
Rubber gym floors are installed over warehouses, school gyms, basements and garage conversions. Two prep failures show up within 12-24 months:
Grinding solves the bond problem; a calcium-chloride or RH test solves the moisture problem. Skip either and the warranty claim comes back to you.
For a 250-500 mm planetary or single-disc floor grinder:
On a 3-head planetary grinder, run three Diamond Trapezoid Grinding Disc (JOY-TP-R3) trapezoid discs per plate for even wear. On a single-disc machine, use one larger plate or a Single Round Segment Diamond Trapezoid Grinding Disc (JOY-TP-R1) trapezoid depending on the holder.
Rolled rubber in 6-8 mm thickness shows bumps and dips. Most gym flooring manufacturers specify F_n 25-30 or a 3 mm/2 m straightedge tolerance.
| Floor condition | Action |
|---|---|
| Under 2 mm/2 m deviation | Grind profile only |
| 2-5 mm deviation | Grind high spots; skim coat low spots with leveling compound |
| Over 5 mm/2 m | Full grinding or self-leveling overlay before flooring |
A: Yes. New slabs have dense trowel paste and curing compound residue. One 30/40 pass is mandatory before any adhesive, or the rubber will delaminate within a year.
A: Technically yes, but you will get uneven profile and swirl marks. Rent a 250 mm single-disc grinder for one day — the adhesive bond depends on it.
A: Do not glue rubber directly. Either let the slab dry for 4-8 weeks and retest, or apply a moisture barrier epoxy primer first. Some rubber products are sold as loose-lay where moisture bars adhesion.
A: Within 24 hours. Clean, vacuum, then roll adhesive. If more than 48 h passes, do a light vacuum and a 60 grit touch-up pass.
Gym flooring prep is a high-repeat commercial segment: schools, cross-boxes, physiotherapy clinics and basements. Grind to CSP 2, test moisture to 75% RH, keep flatness within 3 mm/2 m, and never polish. JOY TECH supplies 30/40 and 60/80 metal-bond trapezoid discs plus edge cup wheels for every common floor grinder, so your crews can spec the right tooling before the gym floor order goes in.
