Average response time: under 24 hours

You cannot polish over spalls, pits, or delaminated areas—the thin top layer will keep flaking. The correct sequence is: grind out all damaged concrete to sound substrate, fill with a polymer-modified cement repair mortar, cure 24–48 hours, then re-grind the patch level with the surrounding floor and resume the normal metal-to-resin polishing sequence. Used correctly, the patched area blends invisibly under polish. The 3'' Ceramic Bond Diamond Transitional Grinding Pads (JOY-RFP-T1) ceramic-bond transition pads bridge the patch boundary cleanly; finish with the Copper Bond Diamond Transitional Polishing Pads (JOY-RFP-C2) and Diamond Resin Floor Polishing Pads (JOY-RFP-02) series to match the surrounding sheen.
Spalling happens when the top cement paste has delaminated from the aggregate below—usually from freeze-thaw, de-icing salts, over-troweling, or a weak surface finish. The polished film you are trying to build rests on a layer that is already loose. Resin pads will cut through the weak paste and leave a shallow, irregular hole in the patch exactly where you started.
Repair mortar is usually lighter and denser than the parent concrete. To blend:
If more than 10–15% of the floor is spalled, if the slab is structurally cracked or settled, or if spalling is caused by a water leak that has not been fixed, stop and call a concrete contractor. Polishing will not save a slab that is moving or saturated.
A: For very small pinholes, yes. But epoxy patches look glossy under polish and stand out; for spalls larger than a coin, use cement repair mortar.
Minimum 24 hours skim coat, 48 hours for deeper repairs. You can rough-grind after 24 hours but wait 7 days for full resin polish if you want color match.
Under oblique light, a fresh patch can be visible for the first 1–2 months. It usually blends as the whole floor ages. Tinted densifier hides it faster.
A: No. Remove the caulk, grind the joint clean, then fill with a flexible polyurea joint filler after polishing. Rigid material in a moving joint will pop out.
Spalled concrete is not a lost cause, but it cannot be polished over. Cut it out, patch it with the right mortar, cure it properly, and re-grind through the full sequence—the result will be a floor that looks original for another decade.
