Average response time: under 24 hours

You cannot truly sharpen a resin-bond pad like a knife, but you can re-dress it: rub the loaded face on a diamond dressing brick, a sandstone block, or a rough (20–30 grit) concrete patch for 30–60 seconds under light pressure. This strips the smeared resin and cement paste and exposes fresh, sharp diamond grains. Do it as soon as the pad starts sliding instead of cutting. Once the diamond layer itself is worn down to the backing, the pad is done—no dressing will bring it back.
Keep a spare set of the Diamond Resin Floor Polishing Pads (JOY-RFP-02) on hand so you can dress one set while the other keeps working. If pads keep loading fast, switch to an open-face style like the Fenix Polishing Pads for Concrete Floor (JOY-RFP-BP1) or finish with the Dry Polishing Wool Pads for Concrete Floor (JOY-RFP-W1) instead of re-dressing repeatedly.
Resin-bond pads hold diamond grains in a polymer matrix. Two failure modes happen on real jobs:
Dressing fixes the first. The second requires replacement.
| Symptom | Loading | Wear-out |
|---|---|---|
| Pad face look | Shiny, glossy, smooth | Thin, flat, backing visible |
| Slurry | None—pad just slides | Fine dust but no bite |
| Fix | Dress on brick / rough concrete | Replace |
After dressing, run the pad on a test tile. It should cut cleanly within one pass. If not, dress again—you may have a worn pad, not a loaded one.
A: Usually 2–3 times over a pad life on typical commercial floors. Once the diamond layer is less than 2 mm thick, dressing stops helping.
A: Yes—run the loaded resin pad against the spinning metal disc for 30 seconds, wet. It opens the bond aggressively but works in a pinch.
A: You are probably using a hard bond on a soft mix, or polishing dry without enough air movement. Switch to a soft/open bond and wet-polish.
A: Marginally. Ceramic bonds wear predictably and do not glaze the same way resin does; if a ceramic pad stops cutting, it is usually worn out.
A glazed resin pad is not scrap—spend 60 seconds on a dressing brick and it will usually cut like new again. But learn the difference between loading and wear-out, and retire pads honestly; a worn pad wasting two hours on a floor costs more than a new puck set.
