Yes, you can polish a floor that was finished with a shake-on dry-shake color hardener, but the tooling sequence is different from normal concrete. The top 3-5 mm of a shake-on floor is a dense, cement-aggregate layer with a Mohs hardness of 6-7 - too hard for a standard medium metal bond. Start at 60 grit with a soft or very-soft metal bond, run copper-bond or ceramic-bond transitional pads between metal and resin, and expect 20-30% lower square-meter output per hour. Done right, shake-on floors polish to a uniform, marble-like gloss.
Dry-shake color hardener is broadcast onto fresh concrete and power-troweled in. The result is a dense, wear-resistant top layer common in warehouses, factories, and big-box retail. To a diamond, that layer feels like hard stone, not concrete. Two problems follow:
| Stage | Shake-on floor | Normal concrete |
|---|---|---|
| Metal bond start | 60 grit, soft bond | 30 grit |
| Metal follow-up | 120, 220 (soft bond) | 60, 120 |
| Transitional | Copper or ceramic bond 80-150 | Skip |
| Densifier | After 120/220 metal | After 120 |
| Resin | 200, 400, 800, 1500 | 200, 400, 800, 1500 |
The transitional step is the secret. Our Copper Bond Transitional Pads (JOY-RFP-C2) straddle metal and resin and close the scratch pattern on dense floors that pure resin pads cannot.
Plan on 15-25 m² per hour per grinder at metal bond stage, versus 30-50 m² on normal concrete. Resin output is similar to normal floors once the surface is flattened. Price the job accordingly: labor and tool wear are higher, but the finished floor earns its keep for 10+ years.
A: Not usually. 30 grit is too aggressive for a thin 3-5 mm hardener layer and will dig through to the weaker paste below, causing a blotchy look. Start at 60.
A: Yes, slightly. The dense layer absorbs less, so use a lower solids lithium densifier at the manufacturer's recommended rate and let it dwell longer.
A: The top layer is colored all the way through, not just stained on top. Light grinding keeps the color; heavy grinding below the 5 mm layer exposes grey concrete.
A: On light jobs you can, but you will spend twice as long at 200 and 400 resin trying to close scratches. Transitional pads pay for themselves on floors over 200 m².
Shake-on color hardener floors are the best-looking polished industrial substrate - but only if you match the bond to the dense top layer. Soft metal bond, copper or ceramic transitional pads, and a slightly slower pace give you a uniform, long-wearing gloss.
