Hybrid diamond pads sit between metal-bond grinding and resin polishing. They use a copper-bond or ceramic-bond matrix that cuts like metal but finishes like resin, letting you skip 1-2 grit steps. Switch to hybrid pads after the last metal-bond pass (typically 120/150 grit) and run through 50/100, 200/400 hybrid pads such as the copper-bond transitional pads, then move to standard resin at 800/1500. Hybrid pads shine on hard concrete, on fast-track jobs, and on floors where metal scratches have to be removed quickly. They are not a replacement for resin - they are a bridge.
A traditional polishing sequence is metal bond (30, 60, 120) then resin (400, 800, 1500, 3000). The jump from 120 metal to 400 resin is the weak point - resin pads cannot fully remove 120 metal scratches, and floors come out with a ghost scratch pattern.
Hybrid pads fill the gap:
| Stage | Bond | Cuts? | Finishes? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30-120 grit | Metal bond | Aggressively | No - leaves deep scratches |
| 50-400 grit | Hybrid (copper/ceramic) | Moderately | Yes - flattens scratches |
| 800-3000 grit | Resin | Barely | High gloss |
For soft, creamy concrete, hybrid pads cut too aggressively and can leave a scratch pattern. Stay with the classic metal-to-resin sequence.
The exact insertion depends on your starting grit. The most common setup:
A typhoon-style copper-bond hybrid pad combines diamond and copper in one puck and is the fastest hybrid option for commercial polishing.
Hybrid pads behave differently from resin. Treat them like soft metal bonds.
No. Hybrid stops at 400-800 grit. For high gloss you still need resin at 1500/3000 and a burnishing pad.
500-800 sqm per set on average concrete. About half the life of resin pads at 800, but they cut faster.
Yes - copper-bond hybrids are the standard transition on marble and terrazzo restoration, where they replace the old acid-hone step.
Only if the burnisher has a variable speed down to 1000 RPM. At 1500+ RPM, hybrid pads glaze and scratch.
Hybrid diamond pads are the bridge between metal grinding and resin polishing. Insert them after 120 grit, run through 100/200/400, densify, and finish with resin. You save a step and get a flatter scratch pattern on hard concrete. JOY TECH supplies copper-bond and ceramic-bond hybrid pads for every common grinder plate size.
