Yes, you can polish concrete without a densifier, and on some floors you will get a good gloss. But densifier is what hardens the surface and makes the shine durable; without it, polished concrete stays softer, absorbs stains, and dulls faster under traffic. Treat densifier as standard for floors that will be walked on, and optional only for light-duty or short-term surfaces.
Densifier is a silicate or siliconate treatment that penetrates the concrete and reacts with the lime to form a harder, denser matrix in the top millimeters. That hardened layer is what reflects light evenly, resists abrasion, and stops dusting. Polishing compresses the surface, but densifier changes its chemistry; the two work together to produce the durable gloss that polished concrete is known for.
Polish without densifier by doing the full resin sequence cleanly: grind to 200 grit, then resin polish through 1500-3000, keeping the floor dust-free between steps. Finish with a burnishing pad. The result can look glossy immediately, but the surface is more porous and softer than a densified floor. Skip densifier only when you accept that the floor will dull faster, stain more easily, and may dust.
Skip densifier on temporary surfaces, low-traffic showrooms where the floor is mostly decorative, or when a coating will be applied on top anyway. For warehouse floors, retail spaces, garages, and any floor with forklifts or foot traffic, use densifier. If you are unsure, apply it: the cost is small compared to the difference in wear.
If you do use densifier, apply it after 400-800 grit resin when the surface is open enough to absorb the liquid, let it cure, then continue polishing. Applying too early wastes product; too late and the pores are closed and it sits on the surface. Follow the manufacturer's coverage rate and let the floor dry completely before the next polishing pass.
A> Usually yes. Without densification the soft surface scratches and wears under traffic, and the gloss fades within months instead of years.
A: It is less effective once the surface is closed, but a diluted topical application can still help. The standard is to densify mid-sequence.
A> No. Densifier is clear and reacts inside the concrete; it does not add color. It can deepen the tone slightly on some floors.
Densifier is not strictly required to get a gloss, but it is required to keep it. Polish cleanly, use densifier at the right stage for durable floors, and skip it only where the floor will not take real traffic.
