Welding burn marks, slag spatters and torch gouges on a concrete floor are removed by diamond grinding, not by acid or scrubbing. Small spots under 30 cm are cleaned with a 125 mm diamond cup wheel on an angle grinder. Larger burn zones in fab shops, auto plants or structural steel erection areas are blended with a walk-behind planetary grinder starting at 30 or 60 grit metal bond, then carried through 200, 400 and 800 resin pads to match the surrounding floor. Most 5-20 cm burn spots disappear in a 15-minute repair.
Never run a resin pad over unfallen slag. The bead shatters the diamonds in one pass. Grind the beads off first with an aggressive cup wheel. Our Diamond Cup Wheel (JOY-CW-R6) with six round segments is the standard tool for this on a 125 mm angle grinder. Hold the wheel flat, do not dig the edge in, and sweep the spot until every bead is gone.
After the beads are gone, the baked brown ring remains. Set up a walk-behind planetary grinder with 30 or 60 grit metal-bond shoes and make 2-3 cross-passes over the burn zone plus a 30 cm margin around it. The goal is to remove 0.3-0.5 mm of surface - enough to take the tint off but not so much that you leave a dish.
For larger fab-shop floors, our trapezoid grinding shoes on a planetary machine clear 10-20 m² per hour of burn marks.
| Surrounding floor | Steps to run over the repair |
|---|---|
| Bare / honed concrete | 60, 120, 200 grit and stop |
| Satin polished (400) | 60, 120, 200, 400 |
| High-gloss polished (800+) | 60, 120, 200, 400, 800, 1500 |
Extend each step 20-30 cm beyond the previous one so the transitions feather out. Burnish the last pass with a standard burnishing pad to match gloss.
A: No. The brown tint is baked-in discoloration of the cement paste. Once you remove 0.3-0.5 mm, the underlying concrete is the original color and stays that way.
A: Only under 0.5 m². Angle grinders leave swirl marks and dish out the floor fast. For anything bigger, use a walk-behind planetary grinder.
A: The embedded beads do, but the heat tint does not. Once the beads are ground off and the tint removed, the floor looks new.
A: Weld on steel plates or fire-resistant blankets, never directly on the polished slab. Sweep after every weld.
Welding burn marks are a routine diamond-grinding repair: cup wheel the beads, planetary-grind the tint, blend up to the surrounding gloss. Keep a cup wheel and a set of trapezoid shoes on the truck - most fab-shop call-outs take under an hour. JOY TECH stocks replacement cup wheels and trapezoid shoes for every major grinder brand.
