Average response time: under 24 hours

Round pads (3, 5 or 7 inch disks) and triangle Velcro pads (usually 3-inch triangles grouped in sets of 3 or 8 on a plate) do the same job - they refine scratches and build gloss - but they wear differently. Triangles cover more floor per plate set and wear more evenly because each triangle rotates independently on a planetary head; round disks leave a circular wear pattern and cost less per pad. For large open warehouses, 8-triangle systems such as the 8-triangle resin pads (JOY-RFP-03) win on square meters per hour. For small machines, edges and budget jobs, classic round pads like the standard round resin pads (JOY-RFP-01) remain the practical choice.
A round polishing pad is a single disk fixed with Velcro to a circular backing plate. A triangle pad is one of several small triangles attached individually to a multi-pad plate. Both are resin with diamond powder inside. The difference is geometry.
A planetary grinder running an 8-triangle plate covers roughly 15-25% more floor per hour than the same machine on a single round disk of equivalent diameter, because the triangles overlap less and the plate can carry more active area. On a 1000 m2 retail fit-out that difference is one extra day of labor. That is why triangle systems dominate rental fleets and large commercial crews.
| Factor | Round pads | Triangle pads |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage per hour | Baseline | +15-25% |
| Wear pattern | Even across disk | Even, per triangle |
| Uneven slabs | Rocks over dips | Conforms better |
| Stock cost per pad | Lower | Higher per set |
| Cost per m2 | Slightly higher | Slightly lower at volume |
| Edge reach | Better on 3-inch rounds | Limited by plate size |
Round pads wear as one unit: when the center dies, the whole disk goes. Triangles wear independently, which means you replace only the two or three triangles that actually hit the hardest wear zone - typically the outer ones. Smart crews keep spare triangles by grit so they top up half a plate instead of buying a full new set. On a 5 inch round plate such as the 125 mm round resin pads (JOY-RFP-S1), there is no such partial replacement - worn means new.
Triangle systems also dodge the classic round-pad failure: the center hole area wears first because of fixed-axis rotation. Free-rotating triangles do not develop that hotspot.
Before choosing, look under your grinder. Most planetary 600-800 mm machines sold after 2015 accept either round plates or triangle plates - but the plate itself is not interchangeable. If you already own a triangle plate, buy triangles. If your machine came with a single round Velcro plate, round pads are the cheaper ecosystem. Mixing does not work: a triangle pad will not sit flat on a round plate and a round disk will not stick to a triangle carrier.
A: The final gloss is set by grit level, densifier and operator technique, not by pad shape. Both reach 3000 grit mirror finish when run correctly.
A: Almost always. Single-disc and edge machines use round pads because they run one fixed axis.
A: Yes - order by the piece from your supplier and top up worn triangles individually. It is the main cost advantage of the format.
A: Round pads. Lower entry cost, simpler stocking, and enough performance for residential and small commercial floors. Move to triangles when the machine plate justifies the throughput.
Round or triangle is a logistics decision, not a quality decision. Round pads suit small machines and budget crews; triangle systems pay back on large floor programs through faster coverage and partial replacement. Match the pad shape to the plate you already own, and stock both formats if your fleet has mixed machines. JOY TECH supplies both round resin pads and 8-triangle sets in every grit from 50 to 3000, so whichever ecosystem your grinders run, the tooling stays in stock.
