Average response time: under 24 hours

UV fading on polished concrete is real but slow: 3-8 years of direct sunlight before dyed or colored floors visibly lighten. Gray concrete fades less, but the gloss softens and the surface chalks. It is not a delamination - the concrete itself is fine. Restoration is a light re-polish: 400, 800, 1500 grit resin pads, white or natural color to avoid staining, plus a fresh penetrating UV-stabilizing guard. Expect 0.2-0.5 mm of material removal and one crew day per 500 m². New floors should always get a UV-resistant guard and blinds or film on the sun-facing glass.
Concrete paste is mineral, so it does not "fade" the way paint does. Three mechanisms cause the visible change:
Look at the floor under a parked car or under a display cabinet. If the covered strip is darker and glossier than the exposed strip, you have UV fading.
| Sign | UV fading | Poor original polish |
|---|---|---|
| Pattern | Sun-facing stripes, under windows | Whole floor, patchy everywhere |
| Surface feel | Smooth, just duller | Scratched, rough |
| Age | 3+ years old | Looked bad from day one |
| Covered areas | Still glossy | Also dull |
For floors with heavy dye loss, mix a small amount of compatible dye into the final densifier coat and burnish it in. For more aggressive restoration on faded but uneven floors, hybrid copper-bond pads cut the chalked layer in one pass before resin.
A: The very surface can chalk slightly, but the densified layer below is still hard. A light 400-800 re-polish restores the hard layer.
A: Only if the color is 50% or more gone. If it is just dull, re-polishing brings back the original tone.
A: 3-5 years with a UV guard and window film, versus 1-2 years on an unprotected sun strip.
A: Exterior concrete fades faster because UV is unfiltered. Plan for a re-polish cycle every 2-3 years and use a penetrating sealer rated for exterior UV.
UV fading is a predictable maintenance event, not a floor failure. Recognize the sun-stripe pattern, run a light 400-800-1500 re-polish with white resin pads, and finish with a UV-stabilized guard. The floor looks new and the next cycle is years away. JOY TECH supplies white resin finishing kits and hybrid cutters for restoration crews.
