To remove paint from a concrete floor efficiently, start with PCD (polycrystalline diamond) tooling on a floor grinder for thick epoxy, polyurethane or heavy build-up paint, then drop to 16# or 30/40# metal-bond diamond discs to strip thin latex, acrylic and water-based coatings. Do not jump to resin polishing pads until every trace of coating is gone — resin pads load up and glaze in minutes on paint.
Paint on concrete is not one thing. The right grit depends on film thickness and chemistry.
| Coating | Typical thickness | First-step tool |
|---|---|---|
| Latex / acrylic wall paint | 50-150 µm | 30/40# or 60/80# metal bond |
| Epoxy floor coating | 200-1000 µm | PCD trapezoid disc |
| Polyurethane / moisture-barrier epoxy | 300-1500 µm | PCD with chip breaker |
| Mastic, tar, glue | variable | Full PCD or PCD+bar combo |
| Thin sealer / curing compound | < 50 µm | 60/80# metal bond |
PCD (polycrystalline diamond) tools shatter and peel thick coatings instead of grinding through them. A PCD disc removes epoxy faster than 5 metal-bond passes and produces far less fume and heat. Use a Double PCD Diamond Trapezoid Grinding Disc with Single Bar (JOY-TP-PCD2B1) for medium build-up, or a Full PCD Diamond Trapezoid Grinding Disc with Alloy Dot (JOY-TP-PCD1A1) for the heaviest coatings. For edge work on an angle grinder, a Diamond PCD Cup Wheels with 6 PCD (JOY-CW-PCD6) handles paint along walls and around doorways.
Once the bulk coating is off, you need to clean the cement paste residue and open the surface for the next step. Work in this sequence:
Skipping a grit below 60/80# after PCD leaves resin that will not open on paint residue.
On open floors above 20 m², use a walk-behind floor grinder with PCD trapezoid shoes — it removes paint 5-10x faster than a hand grinder and leaves a flat, even scratch pattern. Use the hand angle grinder with a PCD cup wheel only for edges, corners, and under cabinets where the big machine cannot reach.
Dry grinding with a HEPA vacuum is standard for paint removal. Wet grinding traps dust but turns dissolved paint into a smear that sticks to the slab and the vacuum filter. If you must go wet, plan on a second dry pass with 60/80# to clean the smear.
A: Start with 30/40# or 60/80# metal-bond trapezoid discs on a floor grinder. Latex is soft, so a medium bond cuts it fast; PCD is overkill unless the paint has been layered for years.
A: It will eventually, but it loads the disc in minutes and wastes tooling. Use PCD first — it is 5-10x faster and cleaner.
A: The surface shows uniform fresh cement color with no glossy or darker patches under strong side light. Wipe a damp cloth over a test area; no color transfer means the coating is gone.
A: Yes — follow up with at least 60/80# and 120/150# metal bond to open the pores and remove the scratch pattern left by PCD. Skip this and sealer will not bond.
Paint removal on concrete is a two-step job: PCD for thick coatings, then a 16# to 150# metal-bond ladder to clean and open the slab. JOY TECH (Xiamen) stocks PCD trapezoid discs and cup wheels for every major floor grinder. For tooling matched to your coating and machine, email [email protected].
