For soft or porous concrete, choose soft-bond resin polishing pads with an open bond design, and bridge the metal-to-resin transition with copper-bond hybrid pads. Hard-bond pads will glaze and stop cutting on soft concrete; soft-bond pads release dull diamond grains faster so fresh diamonds keep cutting. Pair them with a slightly coarser starting grit and lighter pressure to prevent cement paste from loading the bond.
The Diamond Resin Polishing Pads for Concrete Terrazzo Floor (JOY-RFP-01) and the Typhoon Type Diamond Copper Bond Hybrid Resin Polishing Pads (JOY-RFP-C1) are engineered for exactly this scenario; the Copper Bond Diamond Transitional Polishing Pads (JOY-RFP-C2) handles the step between metal grinding and resin polishing without tearing out aggregate.
Soft concrete has a high cement-paste fraction and low aggregate hardness. When a resin pad cuts it, the soft paste does not break the resin bond open the way hard aggregate does. Instead, the paste smears into the diamond pores and loads the pad—you see a shiny, glazed face that stops cutting. This is the most common complaint on 3000+ psi pours and on pumice or cinder-block substrate overlays.
| Bond | Best on | Behaviour on soft concrete |
|---|---|---|
| Hard bond | Hard, dense concrete | Glazes, loads, stops cutting |
| Medium bond | General-purpose concrete | Works but loads quickly after 800 grit |
| Soft bond | Soft / abrasive / porous concrete | Releases dull diamonds, stays open |
| Copper hybrid | Transitional metal-to-resin | Cuts through paste without tearing aggregate |
When in doubt, go one bond softer than you think you need. A soft bond that wears slightly faster is still cheaper than re-doing a floor.
On soft concrete, start one grit coarser than you would on dense concrete and do not over-grind:
A: If a 30/40 metal disc wears out in under 300 m² or if resin pads glaze after 10–15 minutes, your concrete is on the soft/abrasive side. Mohs scratch test with a 3–H pencil also gives a quick reading.
A: No. Extra pressure heats the resin and makes it load faster. You will get a worse result and burn through the pad. Switch to a soft bond instead.
A: Yes, almost always. A lithium or sodium silicate densifier hardens the paste, prevents dusting, and lets the resin pads cut cleanly. Apply it after 200 grit and let it react 2–4 hours before polishing.
A: Expect one set (6–8 pucks per grit level) per 80–120 m² on soft concrete. Buy one spare set—you will use it.
Soft, porous concrete is forgiving to grind but punishing to polish if you use the wrong bond. Move to soft-bond resin pads, add a copper-bond transition step, and densify early. The small extra cost per square meter is paid back in pad life and in a finish that does not haze over after six months.
