On white concrete, light gray slabs, white-topped dyed floors and terrazzo with light aggregate, use white-colored resin polishing pads for the final grit steps (800 through 3000). Standard gray or black-bodied resin pads can leave a faint gray smear or drag marks in the light matrix, because the dark resin bond releases micro-residue onto a surface that has nowhere to hide it. White resin pads use a white resin matrix that stays neutral on light surfaces. The white resin floor polishing pads (JOY-RFP-04) are the final-step answer for retail white floors, white cement overlays, and light-colored dyed concrete where a gray smear is immediately visible.
Resin polishing pads are a mix of diamond powder and a resin bond. Most pads use a dark gray or greenish bond because it is cheap, durable and invisible on mid-gray concrete. On a white or near-white floor that dark bond behaves differently: tiny amounts of resin dust rub off the pad face, mix with floor dust, and smear into the open concrete pores. Under bright lighting the result is faint streaks, patchy dull zones and a floor that looks clean in the morning and gray by noon.
This is not a pad quality problem - it is a color-matching problem. The fix is to switch to a white-bond pad for the last 2-3 grit steps, where the floor is already fine and the pad's own color becomes visible.
You do not need white pads from 50 grit. Switch when the floor is already polished enough that discoloration shows.
On darker floors the standard pads, such as the standard resin polishing pads (JOY-RFP-01), remain the better value because the dark bond is invisible and wears slightly longer.
White pads come in the same sizes as standard pads. For walk-behind machines on white retail floors, the 5 inch / 125 mm round pads such as the 125 mm resin polishing pads (JOY-RFP-S1) cover the field fastest, while 3 inch white pads handle edges and display plinths. Always run the same grit sequence as the rest of the floor - the pad color changes, the process does not.
| Floor color | Pad color for final steps |
|---|---|
| White cement / white overlay | White only, from 800 grit |
| Light gray natural concrete | White recommended from 1500 grit |
| White or cream dye | White, plus clean separate pads per zone |
| Mid-gray natural concrete | Standard gray pads |
| Dark gray, charcoal dye | Standard gray or black-bond pads |
Light floors expose two more mistakes. First, do not use the same pads in a dirty garage zone and the white showroom - pad grit traps oil. Second, vacuum twice before the 1500 grit pass: any dark aggregate dust on a white floor is visibly ground in. Keep a dedicated set of white pads per project so old residue never touches a new white job.
A: Marginal difference. The white resin formulation is slightly softer in some brands, but on the fine final grits where white pads are used, wear difference under 15% - visually irrelevant.
A: You can, but you pay more for a cosmetic difference you cannot see. Stock white pads for light jobs and standard pads for dark jobs.
A: Likely the densifier residue was buffed with a gray pad, or the slab itself is low-grade white cement with dark aggregates. Try one white 3000 grit pass and a clean mop; if gray persists, it is the mix design, not the pad.
A: Yes - they are the standard choice for white terrazzo restoration for the same smear-prevention reason.
On light and white floors, the last two grit steps decide how clean the floor looks. Switch to white resin pads at 800 grit onward, keep them dedicated to clean zones, and the white cement reads white instead of gray. JOY TECH produces white resin polishing pads in 3, 5 and 7 inch diameters, so edges and field finish at the same bright neutral tone.
