Metal bond pads come first, resin bond pads come second. Metal bond (and ceramic/copper bond transitional pads) grind the surface flat and open the concrete; resin bond pads polish and build the gloss. Skipping the metal stages and going straight to resin leaves an unflattened, patchy finish — the resin simply shines the scratches instead of removing them.
Metal bond pads carry diamonds in a metal matrix. They cut aggressively, flatten high spots and remove coatings or laitance. Use them at the coarse grits (30/40 through 120/150). They are the grinding stage of the polishing process and should never be skipped on a slab that has not been prepared. A ceramic bond transitional pad sits between metal and resin when the scratch needs closing gently.
Resin bond pads hold diamonds in a resin matrix that wears more softly, producing a smooth, reflective surface. They run at finer grits (100/200 through 3000) and are where the gloss is built. Resin pads do not flatten the slab — they refine and polish. The diamond resin polishing pads are the workhorses of this stage.
If your concrete is already flat and ground (from a previous job), you can start at transitional or resin. Test a 1 m² patch first to confirm the existing profile matches the pad grit. The copper bond transitional pad is a good bridge when moving from metal to resin on harder concrete.
A: Only on an already-ground surface. On raw concrete you must grind first with metal or ceramic tooling to flatten the slab.
A: Both, but dry grinding needs good dust extraction. Wet use extends pad life and controls dust but makes a slurry you must manage.
A: When the surface is uniformly flat and the scratch from the previous metal grit is even. Check with light at a low angle — no deep gouges should remain.
Grind with metal bond, bridge with transitional pads, then polish with resin — that order gives a flat, glossy floor. JOY TECH supplies all three pad types; tell us your concrete condition and we will recommend where to start and which grits to buy.
