Dry concrete polishing produces silica dust, so use a HEPA-rated dust extractor connected to a dust shroud on the grinder, sized for the machine (at least 150 CFM for a hand grinder, more for floor machines). Run the extraction continuously, change filters on schedule, and wear an N95 or better respirator even with extraction — no system captures 100% of dust.
Concrete dust contains respirable crystalline silica, which causes silicosis with repeated exposure. Regulations in most countries require wet methods or HEPA dust collection on dry grinding. Beyond safety, dust settles in the concrete pores and dulls the polished finish, so extraction also improves the job quality.
Dry pads like the dry polishing pads produce dust that must be extracted at the source; the wool pads for final buffing generate less dust but still need collection.
Wear a respirator rated for silica (N95 minimum, P100 preferred), eye protection and gloves. Vacuum rather than sweep dusty floors. Change clothes or blow off before leaving the site. Wet polishing eliminates dust entirely and is the safest option in occupied buildings — the sponge pads help transition between methods.
A: Only if it has a HEPA filter and a shroud at the tool. A standard shop vac without HEPA re-circulates fine silica dust.
A: Yes. Wet polishing produces slurry instead of dust and is the zero-dust option, at the cost of slurry cleanup.
A:For silica, an N95 or higher (P100) respirator fits tight and filters fine dust. Fit-test the respirator to your face.
Run HEPA extraction at the tool, wear silica-rated PPE, and vacuum rather than sweep — that combination keeps crews safe and the finish clean. JOY TECH supplies dry-rated pads that work with shrouded grinders; tell us your machines and we will confirm the pad and dust setup.
