Honed concrete is 200-400 grit, matte to satin, slip-resistant and cheaper; polished concrete is 800-3000 grit, high-gloss, reflective and more expensive. Choose honed for warehouses, factories and high-traffic industrial floors where slip resistance matters. Choose polished for retail, galleries, showrooms and offices where looks matter. Both use the same diamond tools - honed simply stops earlier in the grit sequence. A resin pad at 400 grit gives honed; the same pads continued to 3000 give polished.
The difference between honed and polished is not a different machine - it is where you stop in the resin grit sequence. Honed stops at 200-400 grit. Polished continues through 800, 1500 and 3000. Cost, look and maintenance all change.
| Factor | Honed | Polished |
|---|---|---|
| Grit | 200-400 | 800-3000 |
| Gloss (60-degree) | 10-30 units | 60-90 units |
| Slip resistance | High | Lower when wet |
| Cost per sqm | Lower | Higher |
| Maintenance | Burnish yearly | Burnish quarterly |
| Best for | Industrial, warehouses | Retail, offices, galleries |
Honed floors hide scratches, oil marks and traffic patterns. They are slip-resistant when wet, which matters in warehouses, workshops and food plants. They also cost 20-30% less than polished because you skip half the resin grits. Use honed where function beats looks.
Polished floors reflect light, reduce lighting bills, and look premium. They are the spec for retail, car showrooms, galleries and modern offices. The trade-off: every scratch and tire mark shows, and wet polished floors can be slippery. Add a non-slip additive if the floor gets wet.
Both finishes densify the same way. The ceramic transitional pad at 200 grit is the point where you decide: stop there for honed, continue through 800/1500/3000 for polished.
For a mixed-use floor (warehouse with showroom), run honed in the warehouse and continue to polished in the showroom, blending at the doorway with a spiral resin pad at 800 grit.
A: Yes. Grind through 800, 1500, 3000 on top of the existing honed floor. It costs less than the original honed job.
No. The 400-grit texture gives grip when wet. Polished concrete is the slippery one - add non-slip coating if needed.
Honed is 20-30% cheaper because it stops at 400 grit and skips 3-4 resin steps. Polished costs more but adds perceived value.
More than polished, because the surface is more porous. Densify honed floors too, and use an impregnating sealer if spills are common.
Honed is the workhorse; polished is the showpiece. Spec honed for industrial, polished for retail, and plan the grit stop at 400 vs 3000. JOY TECH supplies resin pads for both finishes - tell us which look you want for a grit sequence.
