Lithium silicate densifiers are the modern default: low-viscosity, fast-curing, low-sheen build, and they do not leave a white residue. Potassium (K) silicate penetrates deeper and costs 15-25% less per square meter, but needs longer cure time and more aggressive cleaning to prevent efflorescence. Sodium silicate is largely obsolete for polished floors. For most commercial polished-concrete jobs, use lithium; for soft, porous or old concrete, potassium may give a harder final surface.
A densifier is a liquid silicate that reacts with free calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂) in cured concrete to form calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) - the same binder that gives concrete its strength. Filling the capillary pores makes the surface harder (MOHS from 4-5 up to 7-8), dust-proof, and able to accept a high-gloss resin polish without staining or puffing.
Apply densifier between the 100/200 metal-bond stage and the first resin pass. The concrete must be open-pored, not sealed.

If you are still choosing between lithium and potassium on Monday morning, run this decision tree:
Do not mix brands mid-job. Silicate chemistries are not cross-compatible; switching from lithium to potassium halfway through a floor leaves a visible line where the two reaction zones meet.
Test the densifier on a 1 m² patch first. Apply, wait 4 hours, polish to 400 grit, and inspect under raking light. If you see white bloom, reduce the application rate or switch to lithium before committing to the whole floor.
Typical coverage is 40-80 m² per liter depending on porosity. A porous old slab takes more; a dense new slab takes less. For a 1,000 m² floor, budget 15-25 liters of lithium densifier or 12-20 liters of potassium. At USD 8-15 per liter, materials cost is USD 150-350 per 1,000 m² - small compared to labor, but under-ordering means a second trip to supply mid-job.
Calculate coverage by pre-wetting a 1 m² patch and measuring how much liquid absorbs in 10 minutes. Multiply by total floor area and add 20% for edges and missed spots. That is your order quantity.
After densifier cures, do a small burnish test at 1500 RPM on a 1 m² patch. If gloss builds evenly, proceed. If it streaks, the densifier layer is uneven - buff with 400 resin and reapply a thin coat before continuing.
You can, but penetration will be shallow because the surface is already dense. It will still dust-proof, but gloss gain is minimal. Best practice is densifier between 100/200 and 400 resin.
A properly applied densifier lasts the life of the floor. It is not a coating and does not need recoating. Topical sealers over it are what need refresh every 2-5 years.
Standing liquid dried on top. Buff with a 400 resin pad and water, then continue the polish sequence. If haze is deep, you will need to re-grind to 200 metal-bond and reapply.
Yes. Apply densifier after dye (if dye is water-based) and before the resin seal. Acid-based dyes go on after densifier; check with your dye manufacturer.
Choose lithium for speed, cleanliness and high-gloss work; choose potassium for soft, porous or industrial floors where deep penetration matters. Either way, the resin pads you follow it with - JOY TECH's RFP and HTC-compatible ranges - are what convert chemical hardness into visible gloss. Tell us your slab MPSI and target sheen and we will match the densifier and pad combination.
