Neither is universally better — dry polishing is faster and easier to manage on most jobs, wet polishing controls dust perfectly and extends pad life. Choose dry for interior floors with good dust extraction and for speed; choose wet for enclosed spaces, sensitive areas, or very hard concrete where pads glaze. Many contractors dry-grind and wet-polish the final resin steps.
Dry polishing runs the pads without water, creating dust that a HEPA vacuum collects. It is faster (no slurry cleanup), and you can see the surface as you work. Use dry polishing pads rated for dust-free work. The downside is dust management: without good extraction, dust settles in pores and dulls the finish.
Wet polishing uses water to cool the diamonds and carry away dust as slurry. It is the cleanest method for dust-sensitive environments and reduces heat glazing on hard concrete. You need a water feed, slurry management, and dry-up after each step. Wet use extends pad life noticeably. The resin polishing pads handle both wet and dry.
| Factor | Dry | Wet |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Faster | Slower (slurry cleanup) |
| Dust | Managed by vacuum | None (slurry instead) |
| Pad life | Shorter | Longer |
| Glazing on hard concrete | Can happen | Rare |
| Finish clarity | Good | Often better |
| Cleanup | Vacuum bags | Slurry + drying |
Grind dry with metal bond and dust extraction, then wet-polish the 800-1500 resin steps for a cleaner gloss. The dry polishing wool pads work well for final buffing after wet steps. Match the method to the space: occupied buildings favour dry or contained wet work.
A: Often yes for gloss clarity, but dry polishing with good vacuum produces comparable results and is more productive on large floors.
A: Yes, between steps. Keep the grit sequence consistent and vacuum or dry the surface before switching.
A: No — water is safe for concrete. Just remove slurry before it dries, or it can stain the surface.
Dry for speed with strong dust extraction, wet for dust-free work and longer pad life, or combine both. JOY TECH supplies dry and wet-rated pads; tell us your environment and finish target and we will recommend the method and pad set.
